Looking for a diversion this weekend that doesn’t involve bunnies, eggs, boiled crawfish, or the usual Easter stuff? Then head to Broussard, LA, where the local Laotian community celebrates New Year with a three-day festival.
I’ll admit, I didn’t know Broussard, a smallish town just east of Lafayette, HAD a Laotian community. The Advocate wrote about Lanexang Village back in 2008; it’s a neighborhood of about 80 lots, anchored by a Buddhist temple, with 500 to 1,000 Laotian residents.
From the Iberia Parish Travel website: “Lanexang Village celebrates the new year every Easter weekend with a three-day festival that includes live music, a beauty pageant, parades, sand castle building, kids activities, and several vendors selling clothes, jewelry, music, and food from Laos. Location: 7913 Champ Avenue, Broussard, LA 70518”
