Heartland road trip: huitlacoche by the roadside

P7270490Corn as high as an elephant’s eye, along Highway 235, just outside Ada, Ohio.  This field was riddled with corn smut, a/k/a huitlacoche, an edible fungus regarded as a delicacy in Mexico.  Acres and acres of corn filled the fields of Oho–check out where that river of corn ends up in the documentary film King Corn.  Or go see Food, Inc., playing this week at the Landmark Canal Place cinemas daily at 12:30, 2:40, 5:10, 7:30, and 9:40; it examines industrial agriculture’s impact on the American diet.
