Voodoo Gumbo? What on earth is Voodoo Gumbo supposed to taste like? I bought a bag of Zapp’s Potato Chips’ new flavor, despite a less-than-promising name. According to the bag copy:
“No, Zapp’s isn’t getting into the “Black Arts”, it’s just our new, mystery “Limited Edition” flavor. Voodoo Gumbo flavor is a result of an accident. An employee was moving a pallet of spices off the top shelf and dropped it. While cleaning up, someone stuck their finger into the mixture of about 5 flavors and pronounced it geat. We recreated it in our lab, and like gumbo, it’s an “everything in the kitchen” flavor. Just for fun, we had a name the new flavor contest at Zapp’s Annual International Beer Fest in Baton Rouge……”
Despite being a mixture of 5 flavors, the chips don’t taste like much at all. A hint of sugar, a whiff of salt & vinegar, very little heat, fairly pronounced onion/garlic overtones…sort of a mish-mash flavor that’s not distinctly anything. Ingredients include (among others) torula yeast, MSG, autolyzed yeast extract, garlic powder, and natural smoke flavor. I’ll stick to the cajun crawtator and dill flavors.
Have to agree with you on the taste but it is hardly a newnew flavor since it has been on the market at least 6 montha. You just don’t look for junk food like I do
So I’m behind the times? You’re right–I don’t shop for junk food. I try to stay out of the salty snack aisles at the supermarket. I saw this bag on a big display near the entrance.
I love this flavor. We actually had an accidental Zapp’s fest at a small get-together yesterday where everyone ended up bringing Zapp’s and this was the best flavor I’d ever had. It was sweet and savory at the same time and so delicious.
Aw, was your Zapp’s fest in honor of Ron Zappe’s passing? RIP, Mr. Zappe, a true entrepreneur and bon vivant. Cajun craw-tator is still my favorite, followed by the dill flavor (especially when paired with chicken salad).
wow…i just found this again on my dashboard…sorry it took soooooooo long to respond. but no, it wasn’t really inspired by anything except a few hungry stomachs set loose together on a supermarket…that’s always dangerous…
Some of the most inspired binge-fests are set in motion by hungry stomachs roaming the supermarket aisles…
