Louisiana’s fall’s white shrimp season (as opposed to the spring brown shrimp season) opened on Monday from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the LA/TX state line. It lasts until December 16th. Next time you sink your teeth into a shrimp po-boy, think of people like Everett Hymel, who earns his living trawling for shrimp. It’s a threatened livelihood, due to cheap imports, the astronomical cost of fuel, and environmental changes. What can you do? Insist on wild-caught shrimp, even when you’re dining out.
Here’s another account of a shrimp-trawling family from Terrebonne Parish.
