De-tour: National Coney Island

P7240429Natural-casing beef franks star in Detroit’s culinary signature, the Coney Island, a hot dog on a steamed bun, topped with mild, greek-style chili, mustard, and chopped onions.  Locals swear allegiance to a favorite hot dog joint, claiming National Coney Island or Lafayette Coney Island as the best in town.  I can vouch that National’s coneys are delicious, but I can’t say that the faintly sweet, mild  chili added much to the experience, though my better half thought it a good foil for the juicy dog.
